CAO -Students are busy investigating career choices as the Feb. 1st deadline for CAO applications approaches. Students can apply online at www.cao.ie. Evening Study Jan 06- Supervised evening study periods after school have recommenced. The study period provides a safe, quiet and warm place for our students to study. Their project was entitled "Effect of rate of flow and angle on the flow pattern of liquids" - Congratulations! Fundraising Before Christmas students from the school took part in two fundraising events. Boxes of food were delivered to Clarecare for the Christmas Food Appeal helping the needy in our own county. 1st years raised €865 for the childrens hospice. They raided the money by getting sponsorship for a no-homework day in the school which was very successful. The School won the Teacher and Class prize as the amount collected resulted in the largest donation for students to this fundraiser.CLARE FM Morning PrayerStudents from 1st year to Leaving Certs will present "Sunday morning Prayer" on Clare FM during the 6 Sundays of Lent. Fr Gerry Kerry recorded the students in the school during the week ending Jan 29th.Adult Education Evening classes including Pottery, yoga, Patchwork, and Computes, are on offer for Spring 2005. CAO Applications Students can use the school IT facilities to apply to the CAO online at www.cao.ie The site allows students to complete a demo application before completing the real thing. Students should also note that Qualifax - the most comprehensive and up-to-date of colleges and courses is now online at www.qualifax.ie Those who would like to avail of this facility should contact Mrs O'Callaghan Work Shadowing - LCVP 2005 5th year students were out in the workplace for a week (21-27 Feb.) to investigate their chosen careers and "Shadow" a person working in their chosen field. Students kept daily diaries of their experience that will form part of their Career Investigation reports for LCVP. The students and their teachers are most grateful to organizations and individuals that have accepted students. Mocks 2005 3rd years and Leaving Cert students are busy preparing for their mock exams that get underway week beginning Feb 21st. Good luck to all! Herb Garden Mrs Kirwans Home Economics class have been busy planting herbs for use in their cookery class. It also makes an attractive addition to the centre of the school.
Tree Planting Rang Caoimhe first years planted 28 trees around the new pitch as part of National Tree Week. Some of the trees were given to the school by Clare County Council while some students also brought in some saplings for planting.
Computer Classes Lunchtime computer classes for
students commencing Thursday, March 4th. A Commercial
Examining Board of Ireland certificate is awarded in Word,
Spreadsheets, and Databases on successful completion of the practical
exam. The fee is 15 Euros and the course will run each Thursday
lunchtime 1.20 - 1.45 for approx 8 weeks. CSPE NEWS A first year CSPE group recently raised €300 for the ISPCA. Thier teacher, Imelda Bourke organised a visit by Frankie Coote, dog warden with ISPCA Ennis, and some of his canine friends!
School Tour 04 A long awaited trip to Barcelona finally got lift-off on Friday 13th Feb. 04, as students and some of their teachers headed for sunnier parts. The group also got the chance to go to Andorra on a skiing day trip. St John Bosco Feast Day Students and staff celebrated St Johnn Boscos Feast (Day Jan 31st), with a mass in Kildysart Church. Thanks to students who done readings and prayers. Special word of thanks must go to the choir and musicians who really added to the occasion. The college was joined in their celebrations by Sr. Annemarie, Sr. Particia, and Sr. Mary Sarah, members of the Salesians who travelled from Limerick. VEC Awards Two past pupils of the college were presented with VEC Awards on Friday, 23rd Jan 2004 by Chairperson PJ Kelly. Orla Shannon received an Academic Achievement Award while Mairead O'Halloran received a Merit Award. Also present were CEO Padraigín Uí Riordan and our Principal Marion Coughlan Flynn. Prison Governor, John Lonergan Visits John Lonergan, governor of Mountjoy Prison, received a warm welcome at St John Bosco Community College on Tuesday evening 20th Jan. John addressed the meeting on a wide variety of issues including the dramatic changes in Irish life and society today. He emphasised the need for solid foundations for young people in life. Scholarship for Past Pupil, Orla Shannon Past Pupil Orla Shannon who sat her leaving cert June 2003 was awarded an entrance scholarship from the Science and Medicine faculty of the National University of Ireland in Galway on Friday, Jan. 16th. She was presented with the award by the college president, Dr. Iognaid O’Muircheartaigh. Orla is currently studying physiotherapy and every good wish is extended to her. Young Scientist Success Congratulations to Alan Marrinan and his teacher Mr Leo O'Donoghue. Alan came third in his category at the Young Scientist Exhibition recently held in the RDS Dublin. His project was a a study of droplet patterns that are formed at different frequencies. He developed a system of mapping the droplets and organising the patterns, whether random or uniform. Comenius project group welcomes visiting teachers Jan 15th - the school extended a warm welcome to visiting teachers from Norway, Italy, Germany, and Finland. They are planning for next years project entitled "Emigration - Immigration - What it is to be a stranger." Sports 2004 school soccer tournament for junior students is starting week beginning Jan. 19th.
